Is SEO worth it you may wonder often? After all, you’ve used all the techniques you have read about, and you still can’t come up in search on page one of Google. Your small business or blog is not generating a lot of traffic today. What is one to do?

Certainly, SEO has changed over the years just like all of the marketing has. What once worked well for many SEO specialists today does not. Those days of stuffing keywords on your posts and pages are long gone. If you try to do that today, you will surely not be found online.

What has Changed with SEO Recently?

Keyword Density

Gone are the days you could have 10% keyword density on a page of your website or blog. Today 2-3% is more in line what Google wants. You need to have several keywords per article or page now to use for your keyword strategy. I love using the Yoast premium plugin as it calculated this for me as I wrote each new post or page.

Google Brain Rank

Google now uses a machine learning artificial intelligence system to sort through the search results. It helps Google to process the search results. It’s not the only way Google ranks content in its search results, but it does have an impact today. Search Engine World explains in depth how this works with Google’s other ranking like Panda, Hummingbird, etc.

They do say that Brain Rank is the 3rd most important factor out of 100’s for Google ranking in the search results. They go on to explain “RankBrain is designed to help better interpret those queries and effectively translate them, behind the scenes in a way, to find the best pages for the searcher.”

How We Search Today

The way people search today is different too. Many are doing it from their mobile phones and by voice. Searches are no longer done via a desktop anymore. Look at your Google analytics to see where people are searching from now.

If you haven’t looked in a while, you may be amazed how many are searching from their mobile devices or speech tools like Alex and Google Home.

Mobile Friendly is a Must Now

If your website is not mobile friendly you are being penalized by Google. They did warn about this for some time, but it has taken effect now. Your site must be able to be found on all devices and be ready for users to look around. This is the #1 factor now for SEO in 2018.

Website Speed

This one is important today more than ever. People have the attention span of a goldfish which is just 8 seconds. If you don’t have someone’s attention in less than 8 seconds, it’s over. They move on to another site in their search. No one wants to wait for a website to load anymore.

Your Website’s Security

Your site must be secure from hackers. Have the HTTPS for any website that does sales on it is a must today. Be sure you use a reputable company where you can have the keys to your SSL certificate. Read more on Inspire to Thrive about SSL certificates. Not only is this one important to SEO but it’s important for your website users. They will not want to enter in any fill forms without a secure website that is reputable.

Long Tail Keywords

Long tail keywords are generating more in search today than ever before. This levels the field for many smaller businesses today. What exactly are they? Long tail keywords are three and four keyword phrases which are very, very specific to whatever you are selling.

You see, whenever a customer uses a highly specific search phrase, they tend to be looking for exactly what they are going to buy.

Therefore, long tail keywords can help you generate more SEO authority and increase your ranking so your content can be found organically.

If you need help researching keywords Neil Patel has a new tool called Ubersuggest. It is a free tool and is easy to use. I highly recommend trying this one out!

Local Search

Some small business can do well via local searches. If their websites are optimized for local business those near them will find them in their searches. One of the ranking factors for this is to claim your business via Google. This is one I see many small businesses overlook.

Smaller Subtle Changes vs Big Drama Changes in SEO

This is great news to most of us. If you don’t keep up your site won’t totally vanish, but it will decrease in the rankings gradually (unless it is not mobile friendly). Back in the day some websites that were on page 1 vanished altogether. Now one may notice a drop to page 2 or 3 more gradually.

Backlinks Are Still the Backbone of SEO

The links that are incoming to your website are still considering a ranking factor today for SEO. But the quality of them matters today more than ever.

Therefore, if your backlinks contain authoritative websites it will give yours a better ranking.

When you produce great content, people will automatically want to link to it. ShoutMeLoud recently had a Twitter chat about backlinks that gave some great tips for generating backlinks.

Schema Markup

What is this? Schema Markup is a semantic vocabulary of tags (or microdata) that you can add to your HTML to improve the way search engines read and represent your page in search engines pages.

This helps the search engines understand your content and provide the best results for those searching. These work well for products, events, place, person or organization. These are recognized by Google, Yahoo, Bingo and Yandex.

There is no clear data saying that schema markup points to higher rankings, but many believe if it doesn’t now it will in the future.

Meta Keywords

These have been around a while but in 2009 Matt Cutts of Google said he doesn’t use them at all. They are basically useless now and since 2009.

You may notice others still using them, but they are of no use today in 2018. They hold no SEO value so why use them?

Excellent Relevant Content

The type of content you produce today is not only good for you but good for your website’s SEO. Quality content is a ranking factor today. If you are writing blog posts they should be at least 900 words long.

Likewise, there should be a structure to your posts with internal links. Outbound links must be relevant to your readers. Links should not be there for linking sake.

This excellent relevant content will be shared more among the social networks. That type of content will signal that the content is sharable, and that people are reading it.

Updated Content

Content should be updated regularly for Google to crawl your website. Whether your website is a blog or a retail website it should be updated on a regular basis. Google crawls sites that are updated often. It is now part of SEO to have fresh content.

Gone are the days of making a website and leaving it there for years. It must be changed and refreshed to compete with newer websites being made daily.

Having a blog on any website is a great way to have content updated on a regular basis. The same goes for a blog, you should be updating your older content with fresh content. This will allow Google to crawl that post again as a fresh piece of content.

SEO is Not Just for Google

Don’t forget Bingo, Yahoo and Yandex. Google is not the only game in town when it comes to SEO. Many people use Bingo and Yahoo and some even use Yandex. Bing is run by Microsoft and their phones and computers run off the Bing network.

Analytic Tools

After you have put these SEO tips to work be sure to check your Google and Bing webmaster tools and analytics. SEO is like housework – the job is never DONE.

It’s ongoing. Doing SEO for your website is a daily or at least weekly task. Things change rapidly today online, and you must be ready to make changes rapidly as well. Gone are the days of put the site up and forget it.

You can now have emails sent to you from your Google Analytics. Just be sure to ask for the specific questions you want to know about. It could be about a specific audience’s behavior on your website. Track how they are going from one page to another.

If speed was an issue on your site, it could be the new methods you implemented to improve them. Get the emails on the page speed weekly so you know if it has changed for you.

In Conclusion – Is SEO Worth It In 2018?

The answer is a definite YES. SEO is still very important in 2018. Most online activity today starts with a search today. (3.5 billion searches alone on Google per day!)

If you want your content or products to be found online, you must use SEO methods that are relevant today to be found quickly. Like with most things in life, you either have to spend time or money to implement these strategies.

Otherwise, you’ll end up NOT on page of one of Google and all your hard work will be not be found. People no longer have the patience to search for more than 8 seconds.

Be aware of that when you write a new page or post for your site. Make sure it can be found in search when the question is asked.

Therefore, with so much competition online today SEO is worth it more than ever before!

Many of you may know how Facebook has changed their algorithm for Facebook pages. If you didn’t know you probably noticed some decrease in your Facebook page engagements, likes and shares.

In August 2017 Social Media Today reported[1] that since January 2017 the organic reach of Facebook page brands went down 20%. It had been going done since 2013.

It is now less than 5% of your audience that will see your posts from your Facebook page once they have liked your page or have followed it.

Facebook Pages For Brands

When Facebook first came out with Pages small businesses flocked to them, so they didn’t have to share their business services or products with their family and friends on their personal family Facebook accounts. Family and friends were tired of seeing their posts about this product or that service.

The Facebook pages also gave these businesses the opportunity to try out their Facebook ads along with their post boosts.

Many business owners did not jump on the opportunity. After all, they thought social media was supposed to be free to use.

But who was paying for Facebook to maintain all their services and products? It wasn’t the users. Everyone by the millions and then billions joined for FREE.

That’s when Facebook got smart and realized they had to charge for advertising on their platform. It only meant perfect business sense.

The Different Types Of Facebook Promotions And Ads

Many businesses owners think they can boost their regular boosts for a few dollars and it will go a long way. In theory, it will but in reality, it really won’t.

It only will reach those that have liked their page and maybe their friends.

Why Facebook Ads Are Different Than Boosts?

According to a Facebook team member “Boosting a post sends that post from your Page’s wall to other people who may be interested in it, based on your targeting. Creating an ad is similar except that you can send posts to people’s newsfeeds that encourage them to Like your Page, go to your website, or interact with one of your posts just like a boosted post. ”

Therefore, your reach is far greater with an actual Facebook ad vs. a Facebook post boost. That’s an actual big difference.

Of course, to have a greater response, one must spend a little more money. It’s like any other form of advertising. It’s a marketing expense today.

One tidbit to keep in mind: Most Facebook pages only allow for 25 characters on the headline and 90 total character count. These rest of the ads consist of images.

There are different size image requirements for the different types of Facebook ads available today. (And they are subject to change too!)

Different Types of Facebook Advertising

Carousel style ads – These Facebook ads show 3-5 images and/or videos, headlines and links or CTAs in one space—the audience can scroll through the ads horizontally on a desktop or vertically on mobile.

Page Post Engagement – These types of Facebook ads are geared to increasing engagement on your posts.

Page Likes– With these type of Facebook ads you can target a demographic for more page likes. You can pick via an area nearby or worldwide. You can choose from age groups, interests, likes and job titles.

Brand Awareness – Generate interest in your products or service. That is the sole purpose of this type of an ad. You must be repetitive for this type of marketing to work! This helps create an interest so people will look for more information about your brand.

Link Click – Links from the Facebook ads are the most common type of marketing on Facebook. They will send people to a landing page or a special page of your website. Make sure they make sense as to where you are sending them.

Lead Generation – Form fills are the basis of lead generation type of Facebook ads. They serve as a way for you to collect email addresses.

Store Visits – Store visits are huge today for brick and mortar businesses. The purpose of these ads is generating store traffic with special offers. You can target people within a certain mile radius of your location as well as by their interests or demographics.

Video ads – These type of Facebook ads is great for storytelling about a brand. Maybe something about the behind the scenes look of the making of a product. Or how a brand got started in business.

Instagram Ads – With your Facebook ad manager you can also use it to make Instagram ads for the Instagram social network. These will target a younger audience and work very well as the engagement there on Instagram is higher than Facebook[2].

Why You Still Need A Facebook Page Today?

You will still need to have Facebook page today as many people do searches on Facebook for business. It also makes your business appear much more professional[3] than if you don’t have a page at all.

Be sure to completely fill out all your businesses info in the bio and story section of a Facebook page. You can add a shop button or contact button to make it easy for folks to reach you via Facebook anytime from anywhere.

In conclusion on Facebook ads for Facebook Pages

Nowadays companies must decide on a Facebook marketing budget to be sure to reach these massive and dynamic audience. Social media is free to be social on, but for marketing, there is a cost – an investment for your business.

Many people today do not use Twitter regularly. They make think it’s passe. Some people signed up for a Twitter account and never logged back in. Others got confused on how to use Twitter and gave up. They could not comprehend how to use it or why.

But if you turn on any news today – on TV, online, in print or video you will see who tweeted this or who tweeted that. Twitter has become part of the news!

Why Twitter Matters Today?

There are 328 billion monthly active users on Twitter today. Of those millions only 1/3 or 100,000 million users tweet daily. There are over 500 million tweets sent per day.

(See why your tweets should be unique?) 50% of users make more than $50,000/yr. annual. (A great target to market your services or goods!) Facebook’s biggest users make just $30,000 or less per year. * A few facts to give you thought on why you should consider using Twitter.

*Twitter stats via[1]

But wait! If you are a small business owner or blogger do you understand the power of Twitter being SEO Friendly too?

Twitter Is SEO Friendly Carrying SEO Juice

In 2015 Google and Twitter made a deal in which Twitter gave Google access to its Twitter stream. They allowed them to show relevant tweets when people searched on Google for something. Google has over 200 search signals to give value to what shows up on its search pages.

About 7% of all tweets make it into the Google search. Let’s explore how your tweets can be one of those 7% found on Google today!

4 Twitter Search Categories

The Tweet Strength: This is based on how many people are talking about the tweet and trend. It’s based on hashtag usage and keyword frequency.

The Tweet Engagement: The value of tweet to others. How many people interacted with it. Impressions, favorites, retweets, video views and clicks to links.

The Twitter User Influence: User influence is based on the user regarding his or her network on Twitter. Follower/following ratio and lists included in. It also considers Twitter mentions.

The Link/Page Strength: Traffic to sites from external links via Twitter. Links to specific pages and their strength.

How to Optimize Tweets for Search?

Use relevant hashtags and keywords for your topics in your tweets. You can quickly check your Twitter analytics[2] to see what is working best for your tweets.

Leave room for others to ReTweet your tweet. Getting more retweets is a key component of Twitter optimization.

Tweet breaking news in your industry. These types of tweets will have a higher chance of being indexed by Google and show up in the Google search results.

Make sure your tweets can be “engaging” – Ask questions or tag others in posts that mention them.

Add comments to your ReTweets. Comment on why someone should read the tweet, watch the video or click the link. Make it compelling!

Your Twitter Account Optimized

Optimize your bio. Label your profile photo and cover photo with the correct name. Your photo should have your name or business name. Be sure to use the dashes in between words too. Avoid user numbers in your bio, thought one number is okay.

Introduce yourself in your bio – Your Twitter bio what users look at when you follow them. Be unique and make yourself human! Don’t use hashtags in your bio, this is something I see many peeps doing today still. When you do it takes users to that hashtag stream and away from your profile.

Link back to your Twitter account from your website or blog. Not only does this help SEO but helps people to find you quickly on Twitter too when they visit your website.

Include your Twitter account to your Linkedin, Facebook and other social networking sites that allow it.

Be sure you are using the @ in your sharing tool. Make it easy for folks to share your content and give you credit on Twitter. This is another thing I see many bloggers forgetting to do or some I’ve noticed have @@. Check your share links!

Submit your Twitter account to directories made for Twitter like Twellow, Local Tweets, Twibs, Twiends to name a few.

Optimize your Twitter list names. Have them keyword rich and don’t forget the long tail keywords.

The Preferred Social Account – Yes, It’s Twitter!

Use Google markup – Specify your preferred social network in your Google account. Google algorithms process the social profiles you specify and then display the most relevant ones in response to users’ queries. Get your directions here from the Google developers[3].

Be sure to include your Twitter profile in this one. You can also add your other social network’s too.

Twitter has announced recently more on their API for 2018 to come. API stands Application program interface (API) is a set of routines, protocols, and tools for building software applications.

An API specifies how software components should interact. Additionally, APIs are used when programming graphical user interface (GUI) components. (via webopedia[4]).

There are many areas that will be impacted by the changes on Twitter:

The public REST and Streaming APIs.

The Ads API.

The Gnip data products.

Display products, such as Twitter Kit for embedded Tweets and timelines displayed on iOS, Android, and Web.

You can read more about these changes on the Twitter developer website[5].

Twitter SEO via Search with Alexa

The Amazon Echo has a Twitter reader. You can hear the top trends on Twitter. You can ask it to read Twitter’s top tweets and notification.

It could soon even use push notification to warn you of traffic via this Twitter reader.

Google is not the only search engine that displays Twitter results in its newsfeed. Bing does the same too. Twitter is SEO friendly to the 2 big top search engines today.

Bing generates over 7% of search today with 873,964,000 searches per day[6]. If you have bought a new laptop computer today that uses Microsoft chances are you may be using Bing.

It comes with the new laptop. I recently purchased a Dell a month ago and was surprised to see how much Bing was integrated into it.

Bing still gives it users rewards to search today. You must be logged in so they can keep track of how many searches you do with Bing. They give discounts, offers on events, etc.

If you have an Apple phone you are most likely using Siri for search. Siri is integrated with Bing.
Bing search may just be underestimated today! Imagine having your tweets found via Siri when people are searching with their iPhones.

What is Quora?

Quora is a question and answer site that has been around since 2010. Questions are asked, answered, edited and organized by the community of its own users. They do require users on their network to use their real names.

Quora users can vote on others answers, comment and followers others on this question/answer social network.

This website was founded by 2 former Facebook employees[1] and is located in Mountain View, California.

In 2013 Quora launched a blogging platform on the website. They rolled out advertising on there in 2016.

According to Alexa most of the users are from the United States (33.7%) followed by India. There are over 200 hundred million visitors a month to the Quora website today. (According to Quora’s founder and CEO.)[2]

Does Quora Give You Any SEO Link Juice?

All the links that are sprinkled throughout your answers are no -follow. You must be careful not to link to all of your answers. No-follow links are a good blend with follow links for your website’s seo.

No follow links are like referrals, they can drive you traffic via the link though it doesn’t hold SEO juice. But more traffic to your blog or website is good for your overall SEO.

Using Quora takes a long time before you will get traffic to your blog or website but once you do it begins to snowball. Users swear by its traffic generation power!

But wait there’s more – Google and Bing show Quora answers in their search results. Imagine if your answer came up at the top in the search engines? That is SEO working at its best.

7 Ways Quora Can Help You

Show Your Expertise – Answer questions day after day. I got addicted to it like others get addicted to doing crossword puzzles every day. Get yourself in the habit whether its daily or several times per week. Answer questions in your niche to become an expert.

Blog Away – You can blog there on the Quora site. This way you don’t have to answer others questions on this network. It is a free way to blog and there are no ads that will show up on it.

Connect With Other Liked Minded People – follow others and engage with them as it is a social network too. I sometimes may ask very technical questions there that I cannot understand from elsewhere. People are always happy to help by answering questions.

Learn Things From Others – Read on your favorite topics or ask questions. You can really learn a lot on this network – again like doing a crossword puzzle. It gets your mind going.

Network with others in your field – You will likely find people on Quora that you don’t know on Facebook or Twitter. That is the power of a social network.

Rewards – Get rewarded with their top writers program. Top writers are invited to attend events and receive gifts for their efforts. (Started in 2012). You will next to some users the TW 2016 (or year they received the recognition). Check out the blog post on the 2016 Quora top writers[3] and what they received.

Generate Traffic – You will generate traffic eventually from being consistent on the Quora network. This takes time so don’t lose patience with it. I just started getting traffic after answering 80 questions. It’s a lengthy process. So be sure to have fun answering questions.

Be Careful of Using Too Many Links on Quora!

Follow the 80/20 rule on using links in your answers as I noticed Neil Patel got banned on Quora about a month ago. I was shocked to see Neil banned on the Quora website. But being banned can happen to anyone on Quora just like on Twitter.

Some users claim they get banned for 7 days and then are allowed back on. They don’t get the reason for the ban either. A Quora ban is like a Twitter suspension[4]. So be careful about inserting too many links to your own blog or website on Quora.

Mix up your answers without links and others with links and make sure the links you use are adding value to your answers.

Quora is a long term strategy to drive traffic to your blog or website today -(@Lisapatb) Click To Tweet

Is Quora a Social Network too?

Yes. Quora allows you to follow others, upvote or downvote answers and to showcase your profile on their website. The network is a sharing knowledge social network. Ask and answer, share and engage with others there.

Don’t get discouraged if others are not giving you any upvotes. Start upvoting your favorite answers and you will see the return – eventually. Quora results do not happen fast!

Quora makes it easy to share your answers or others answers on Twitter and Facebook with one click. If you have a following on either network your followers will see that you are on Quora and may follow you there too.

How to Stand Out On Quora

Answer questions with stories and insert pictures/graphs to show your answers visually.

Spend time formulating quality answers. If it’s a simple question a user is asking then answer simply too. Mix it up!

Fill out your profile information completely. Use you photo – not an image. People love relating with other people and not so much with logos. Tell others about yourself and why they should ask you questions.

Write about your credentials and be sure to add your “knows about” section on topics you want to answer questions for.

Conclusion Using Quora

Quora is a long term strategy to drive traffic to your blog or website today. It will not happen overnight. Many power users there claim it’s the #1 source of traffic.

So get yourself comfortable when you start out using Quora and really enjoy it. Once you enjoy it will become a habit like doing those crossword puzzles. You will surely reap the benefits of Quora over time.

Have you have tried to share someone’s great blog post only to find their Twitter handle or other social network handle are not there? It’s been my pet peeve for years. I have seen it since I started blogging back in 2011. I still am seeing it more and more lately and it surprises me that in 2017 people haven’t added their usernames to their social share buttons.

When I go to share posts from blogs the share button says @wordpress.com or via @Shareaholic. Some say nothing at all. How can bloggers get credited for their work on social media if they don’t label their share buttons? Don’t they wonder why they are not getting more shares?

How Social Share Buttons Increase Engagement

Not only do bloggers not get credit but those that want to share and give credit cannot do so easily. I then have to manually change it on Twitter or in my Buffer app if I want to give credit to who wrote the piece. I see this on WordPress.com blogs, Shareaholic buttons, ShareThis and Digg Diggsocial share buttons to name a few. It takes a few extra minutes to do this and if I’m on the go with my mobile I will not do it.

If that social share button was labeled I could share it and then engage with them on the social network where I shared. They may thank me and we will then be having a conversation on the social network. Engagement on social media is key today!

How to Label Your Social Share Buttons

This is an easy fix to label your social share buttons and I don’t understand why more bloggers don’t use it. It helps to see who the author is and give credit to them on the social networks. All one has to do is to fill out the info with their user name on their share button settings. Many of these settings can be fixed on the plugin settings. Some of these social share buttons also offer customization of the buttons display on your website. You can change the color or size of the social share buttons. Do take advantage of the customization available.

And now you can see the difference below that the social share buttons will make, when someone clicks the tweet button. And the same would go for the other social share buttons too.

You can also do this with the Digg Digg plug – in for the WordPress self-hosted websites. You go into your Digg Digg plug-in and then to your Global configurations there and you will see this screen where you can add your usernames.

You also can add your username for the Buffer. The Buffer is really a must and you know how much I love the Buffer app. The buffer is a great way to time your social shares so they are not going all out at once on any social network.

Different Social Share Buttons and Social Proof

SaveThere are many new social share buttons today you can choose from. I have recently added Social Warfare to my own blog after it was updated and Shareaholic no longer worked with my new theme. I love how Social Warfare Social Share buttons show the count for each network you choose and a total of all. This really helps to show social proof. It provides evidence to people visiting that your content is shareable and that your blog is not a ghost town.

People love to share. ” 69% said they share information because it allows them to feel more involved in the world. To get the word out about causes they care about. 84% of respondents share because it is a good way to support causes or issues they care about.” – tripleseo.com/why-do-people-share/

With Social Warfare you can have a special size image just for Pinterest. That is very important for pinning images on Pinterest. They also have a great click to tweet feature where you can choose from several styles each time you use a click to tweet on a blog post. All this is for just $29/year – it is well worth it.

How Social Shares Effect SEO

According to Search Engine Land social signals are emerging as ranking factors as search engines determine how to leverage our social interaction and behavior. Having your own social presence that is well regarded is important today. Getting social shares is ideal for SEO. Good things happen when more people see your brand or your profile online.

Others have found that stories and blog posts with many social shares have a higher ranking in the search engines. They go on to say that there are many secondary benefits of social sharing on the search engine rankings. So please check your social share buttons on your blog or website today and you will see more engagement on your blog and on the social networks when they are correct.

Do your share buttons make it easy to others to share your content across the social networks?
Do you come across some blogs that don’t have their share buttons set up still?
